Ashfield 35 - 15 Keyworth

Team: Dom, Harry Brook, Jonathan, Matthew Haynes, Oscar, Michael, Alfie, Dan, Imogen, Jonathan, Adam, Oliver & Callum

A beautiful crisp Sunday morning, perfect conditions for running rugby saw Keyworth travelling to Sutton in Ashfield for our second match out in 2012.

When the teams got into top gear the play, was very evenly matched junior rugby with both sides demonstrating excellent attacking and defending play with skill and precision. Ashfield broke the deadlock and took the lead in the first half with some excellent tries through some piercing running by the back row forwards which was duly converted. We did not get as many tries as our opponents’ but we matched them with good team play and dedication. I watched some excellent tackling from Imogen, Michael, Callum and Dan. Our backs showed some particularly good handling to pass the ball along the line only to get snagged a couple of metres short of the try line, but some excellent support play from the forwards allowed the ball to be recycled quickly from the ruck and drove over for a try in the corner by Oscar. Keyworth came back at Ashfield with grit and determination but Ashfield held their ground to the final whistle.

In a hard fought, entertaining and nail biting match between two excellent teams, striving to play rugby in the right spirit, it was Ashfield who took the spoils.

Trys by Oscar and Michael

Coach: Paul Stevenson would like to thank the entire squad of players for all their hard work, commitment to good team work, and working with feed back that had been given to you as a team it showed in your performance. It was a pleasure to watch the skills you brought as a team this week well done.

I have awarded man of the match today to Callum, who battled very hard …although of course I was very proud of you all..

The spectators witnessed a thoroughly entertaining game of rugby, fitting to grace the pitches of the more famous stadiums.

Melton v Keyworth

22 Jan 2012

This weeks report was compiled by an ex RAF rugby coach as a guest reporter.(thanks Larraine).

It was a v.cold and windy day at Melton with even the pigeons struggling for purchase on the surrounding trees!

Keyworth U12's were lethargic from the start (late nights, too many tinnies?). Unfortunately the forwards seemed convinced that the ball would come to them if they waited long enough forgetting that Melton had other ideas and no intention of letting this happen. There were some flashes of competency from Oscar , Imogen & Dan with Adam & Michael working very hard to keep Melton at bay but generally the backs were spread so thin they couldn't work the ball to one another and forwards seemed to be in a state of extreme torpor.

Ball handling wasn't bad -  better in many respects to Meltons who dropped frequently and Keyworth could so easily have come away with more, but stagnant play and too few players prepared to run and tackle sealed their fate. Melton could clearly smell Keyworths desperation and inner conflict not a pleasant sight!

Scrums definitely need more work, Keyworth loosing 99% of these on the day and often feeding the ball back to Melton, not ideal after the balls been hard won. The scrum half was  having to play too close to the scrum to have any chance of digging out the ball thus restricting his field of view allowing Melton to break quickly.

Often it seemed that when key players were floored Melton had an open run to the line - again something to work on..

All in all not the U12's finest hour but rugby's like that, pick yourself up for Ashfield and carry on. A special mention for Imogen who is apparently new to the side but who worked and ran very well looking far more part of the team than some of the others.

Keyworth can only hope that better things are to follow as no doubt parents, coaches and players don't want a repeat performance, hours in the cold to watch a below par performance is nobody's idea of a fun day out!

Don't forget players talk to one another work out your teams weakness and plug them Melton certainly worked on this aspect and the end result  reflected that!

As for the score best left as a distant memory it was almost as big as the Melton players themselves!..

Keyworth v Kesteven

4 December 2011

Team: Dom, Harry Brook, Jonathan, Harry, Matthew Haynes, Jack, Oscar, Michael, Alfie, Adam, Matt ,Edward, Izaak, Oliver & Callum,

Coach: Paul Stevenson

A cold winters morning at West Bridgford first half kicked off well for Keyworth  their was some brilliant tackling by Callum, Michael and Harry Brooks. Some great clearance, we were winning most of the scrums passing the ball proved easy but catching it and keeping hold of it was like watching a bunch of toddlers playing in the play ground.1st half  we ended two down to Kesteven.

During half time following some stern talking from Coach Paul & the Keyworth boys came out fighting & in high spirits looking  a better team and they kept Kesteven pinned in their own half for most of the game. Once again there was some brilliant tackling going on from Keyworth with Oscar scoring two tries. Kesteven had the luck with them this half scoring a try.

Score: Kesteven 3 Keyworth 2

Some interesting refereeing saw Michael's try disallowed as he went over the try line but that's rugby and all the luck was with Kesteven today. The boys took it in their stride and looked to the next game to make amends.

Second match Keyworth v West Brigeford (WB)

A great game, both team's, were well matched, which gave a spectacular game to watch from the sideline. Keyworth kicked off, the ball was gathered by WB forwards, Keyworth forwards were straight at WB, WB recycled the ball and passed out to their back's, some good cover tackles by our centre's, Harry Gray and Izaak slowed down WB attack the ball knocked on by keyworth, which gave WB a line out on their 22 metre line, WB won the ball and passed out to there back's. Keyworth Harry Gray put in big tackle on their centre just on the WB 10 metre line. Keyworth  managed to get ball back to Oscar who hoofed the ball to the WB line where their full back gathered the ball well with solid WB backs in support even with Izaak putting in a cover tackle WB were up to our 10 meter line with Keyworth forwards giving there all, WB still managed a try. Keyworth went on to equal the score with an excellent try from Oscar the & whistle went for half-time  West Bridgeford 1 Keyworth 1.

The second half commenced with Keyworth's Jonathan and Alfie coming back on, all our lads showing our supporters what a great team can be the skills they bring to the game are simply outstanding, and this season they are showing that they can work as a team when their put there minds to it. Back to the game, they were more organised this half there was some excellent defending picking up loose ball and the mauls were great to watch. I watched a great tackle from Dom. Great passing from Michael to Harry Brooks and then onto Oscar, who made a great run to the try line. Just before this try, Oscar made me smile with a brilliant tactic if the Ref hadn't seen it. I could see what he was trying to do, and he would have had a free run down to the try line being in possession of the ball had it worked. When Oscar had to kick off, he put his left foot to the ball not once but trice and held on to it. On the third time he tapped the ball to Michael, and with the help of Harry Brooks set up another try for Oscar. WB managed to score a try in the last few minutes of the match which made the final score : West Bridgford - 2, Keyworth - 2

Overall the Keyworth boys worked hard putting into practice the skills & fitness picked up at training. At times, creating an overlap and the slick ball handling showed much promise for the remaining matches of the season. Well done boys you should all be proud of yourselves.

Sunday 27th November

Keyworth 68  Mellish 0

Team: Dom, Harry Brook, Jonathan, Harry, Matthew Haynes, Jack, Oscar, Michael, Alfie, Adam, Mat and Edward Isaac, Oliver.

It was a cold windy day at Keyworth when the U12's welcomed Mellish for a friendly match following last weeks misty tournament at their ground. Keyworth kicked off to start the match and were soon pressuring the Mellish line. After a period of sustained pressure, Oscar nicely fed the ball to Michael who then made a mazy run through several missed tackles to score a beautiful try which was converted by Oscar. Oscar went on to score our second try in this half quickly followed by Jack with a third following a blistering run down the wing and successfully converted. There was some brilliant skills out on the pitch today both rucking & tackling. Isaac I saw him do at least six brilliant ones our scrum was much better this week with Michael (Scrum Half) waiting for the ball who fed it nice & quickly to Oscar who then barged his way through to the try line what team work! Our forwards took their counterparts head - on from the start, a true gutsy performance, driving our rucks & mauls forward no-end. This first half was absolutely brilliant we finished with 7 tries and 6 converted.

The second half was also full of excellent performances. Mellish pressurising our forwards and starving our backs of the ball. It just showed when Keyworth lads play well what they can do with further great tackling on display two good tackles from Harry Gray, the forwards complimenting the backs this weekend. Some elusive running from Oscar and Jack who both made excellent try's with some great support from the rest of the team to make the try's possible.

What certainly came across in the second half was Keyworth defence it never showed signs of weakening however close some great pushes from Mellish came the boys seemed determined to keep Mellish out whatever the effort.
An excellent day's work boys, well done.

Man of the match was Michael - well deserved I must say that he showed that he was a good team player with good rugby skills also good communication skills which he conveyed to the rest of the team well done.

30th October 2011

Paviors 4 - Keyworth 3

Team: Edward, Matthew, Dom, Alfie and Oscar, Harry, Michael, Toby, Adam, Jonathan, Mathew, Jack, and Isaac.

On a glorious sunny morning Keyworth were outstanding from start to finish, up front the forwards, they were all fantastic, they secured ball at breakdown, tackled anything in a Paviors shirt, and won countless rucks from not only our ball but winning turnover ball from the hosts as well, and they made huge ground every time they went forward. Behind the forwards our backs, they were all outstanding, their defence gave Paviors backs no room to play and tackled them on every occasion. With ball in hand, they caused no end of problems for the Paviors defence. Back to the game Keyworth raced into a (2) try lead, our 1st score came from excellent rucking with the ball fed to Isaac who burst his way through the Paviors defence to touch down. The second try came with great help from our forwards which released our backs with slick passing along the back line to Oscar who tied Paviors defenders in knots to sprint over the line to score. The home team made a try before half time making the score Paviors 1 Keyworth 2. The first half there were some brilliant tackling from Edward, Michael, and Jack who also made an excellent run to the try line before he was tackled to the ground.

In the second half Keyworth were again excellent throughout taking it on from the first half, Paviors did draw level with the first score of this half then went on to get another try. This half there was some excellent tackling from Adam, Jack and Alfie. Oscar made a brilliant kick right into the hands of Adam who had a clear run down and smashed over the try line which made us three all. Keyworth kept Paviors under pressure but they managed to peel away and score the winning try. "Well done Keyworth boys, every one of you played a outstanding game".

Man of the match:  Isaac well done.

There then followed a shorter match of 10 mins each way which Keyworth won 2-0. Oscar scored the first of the two tries following on from good feedout from the scrum. Paviors did their best to defend but Oscar was tenacious in getting through. The Keyworth boys, despite being tired, kept the pressure on, and kept the ball in Paviors territory for most of the first half. There were several more almost tries, but the final one came from Adam, having had a lot of support from the backs. Well done to all!

Keyworth v Ashfield

Final Score 49-12

The U12's play was inspiring from the whistle with some great fast ball and quick off loading, some fantastic pace by the backs and withering runs proved too much for Ashfield. Michael was always in there to get the quick ball keeping the pace up and feeding Adam ,Oscar, Jack with Harry Brooks always in the thick of it, supporting driving forward and proving a handful for Ashfields defence. Keyworth did a good job in defence and the pace didn't drop for a second some great hits and team effort controlling the game for most of the 1st half.

As parents we wondered where this performance had been hiding and if they could keep it up!

At half-time Keyworth introduced some guest players from West Bridgeford who added a different dimension to the play, whilst slowing the play down it was a useful experience to get the forwards used to substitution and complete change of play, Ashfield began to get back in with the slower pace but Keyworths backs still showed moments of inspiration and the Bridgeford boys kept Ashfield at bay - completely different pace but just as compelling to watch!

As parents it was a fantastic spectator game (after the numerous disappointments of England!) - Technical rugby with amazing pace and some searing runs (Jack)  with all Keyworth players playing as a Team and brimming with confidence a truly inspired performance all round and fantastic to watch!

Tries - Michael x2, Adam x2, Jack x2, Oscar x1 - Conversions by Jack & Oscar.

Following a brief encounter between West Bridgeford and Ashfield Keyworth went in for a 10 min. match with West Bridgeford boys. A tired team put in a solid performance fast and furious with some good defence, tired legs began to tell but they held it together the play different again with the boys fighting every ball. Not sure of the score but Keyworth won but that seems less important than the days performances and enjoyment for the players & parents alike.

The team should be really proud of Sundays play!

Watch the kicking though as loosing possession will cause problems against fast backs remember the 8th commandment of rugby!

"Thou shalt not kick the ball to thine enemies unless it bounceth; for the Spirit of the bounce of the Ball may cause confusion unto them, and if thy heart be pure, make it bounceth back unto you. "

Great performance by the Team fast play and keeping possession seems to be the answer with solid defense!
